Excerpts from Light, Marc Adams' first collection of poetry.
Why Is It You Talk About Love?
"...My heart, pounding
in my ears from fear.
My feet, tired and sore from running and stumbling.
My face and arms, aching from blows and grasps.
Why is it that the
times I think I am doing okay
Are the times you think I am the furthest from honor?
Why do you believe that God
Needs you to make wrong things right?
My eyes, burned and swollen from years of weeping.
My hands, stiff and clenched from years of endless prayer
My mouth, tender from biting my pillow to silence my cries.
Why is it that when I
try the hardest to please you
You think I am trying to hide something?
Why do you believe that God
Uses pain to teach a child about love?"
Over
(For Jacob)
"...For you the waiting
is over.
You have gone away.
The chains that bound you are broken
Now you are free.
Seems like a strange
choosing to most.
You led where many could only follow.
Most wonder how you got so close to the edge
When there was growing safety on solid ground.
For you the waiting is
over.
Have you found your peace?
The strain of living and breathing
Ended with a moments’ action
Seems like it was only
yesterday
You were smiling and laughing.
Inspiring callous hearts like mine
Making me forget my own sadness..."
Light
"...You said that I
could find peace.
Then you told me I was worthless.
You said that I could smile again.
Then you turned out the light.
You were no different than the others
Expecting what I could never give.
Promising the road to hope
Then leaving me alone,
Lonely and afraid..."
